My Senior Capstone was to create a science fiction novel that, when completed, would be popular with young adults.


In the beginning, I was truly debating what I should do for my Capstone. Many of my plans and ideas were either very difficult to accomplish, or just weren't considered 'Capstone Material'. I felt like I couldn't do much. That was until I thought about writing. After viewing past writing works, I thought that writing a novel would be a good Capstone for me to do, since it was something I could do. But this project wasn't something I could toss willingly away and return three months later to redo or continue, like my other stories. This had to have dedication. I had to actually make a novel, which required much more than a few thousand words and 40 pages. This had to be bigger than anything I have ever written. Not only did I have to plan things out, but I had to write out my ideas and find someone to point out anything wrong with those ideas, or if there could have been something better said in a sentence, or if an action was necessary in a certain event in the plot. I needed a strong critic so I could continue developing my story without feeling like what I wrote was repetitive, or lazy. That's why I asked Ms. Pahomov for assistance, because she is far more experienced in the ways of story writing than I am.

- TV Tropes is one of the many sources I decided to use on this project.  I used TV Tropes mainly because it provides an overview of what something is and how it can be used effectively. TV Tropes helped me understand things that comes with creating certain characters, including specific writing sins, like Mary Sues and other things. This helps me out simply because this is a basic view of what I should do and what I shouldn't do when writing up a character or characters, and it definitely is going to help . This site helped me before, and it's definitely going to help me now.

- This got my attention, mostly because of the fact that this had tips to make a great story. Specifically, I enjoy the statement 'Go beyond the 5 senses'. Obviously, in this writing, I will be needing to go past the general senses of touch, taste, smell, hearing, and sight. I tend to have difficulties with describing without sticking with just those senses. For me, I need to go beyond what the senses say and what actions take place between those senses.

-This is another one of the basics with creating a story. I found this reliable because this site showed me how to create the skeleton of my story. So far, I can't seem to get a solid setting down in my book. I'm getting there though. This served as a guideline for me; a bullet point list or a check list. As I continued to write, I checked onto this page to see if I was following the guidelines to making a good story. I may not have a solid setting, but with this guideline, I'm sure I can get one down as I continue to work on it.

This page caught my eye mainly because this was a page developed by an author who has written many novels and books. I figured not only did I need basic advice, but I need much more advanced advice. Many things like character development and 'points of no return' come from this source. I'm going to need many tips if I want to write a story that makes the reader feel for the characters, so this source will help when I'm putting the 'meat' into the story, once I have the outline set in stone.

Of course I needed to have some knowledge on how to publicize a book. The first thing I could find was what I took, and this was about short stories. I chose this as a source mainly because of the fact that publication of a story is the same for short and long ones. Publication is something I want to do with my story and hopefully, I can gain some profit from the thing I like to do, which is creating art, so the tips on this page will definitely help me when I get to the point of publication.

- The one thing I was unsure about was what a manuscript was and how it corresponded with making a story. This site helped clear everything up. Manuscripts are basically unfinished papers in the process of becoming a story. I felt like this needed to be covered in my studies because of the fact that I was curious if a manuscript was needed in order for an editor or publisher to properly edit or publish a story. The idea is that a manuscript is something that you do as a rough draft. I felt as if I needed to learn what a manuscript was before I continued with my outline.

- This is a list of publishers who work with people like me; young adults. This became a source mainly because I plan to publish the book as a young adult and because of the fact that I need a publisher. This large list of publishers certainly help me mainly because I have choice and variety. I don't know which I will use personally, but, to me, this is a good source to have, mainly because of the fact that with a big list, I  can narrow down my people and see which one would be good for me.

This was the first person/mentor I went to for my story. Sadly, she could not mentor me, because of the fact that she had another project that she was occupied with. I used her as a source because this was the first person that my parents had found to assist me with this project. Though she may have been busy mentoring another person, she did give me the insight to use an english teacher to help with my project. I was happy that she saw potential in me and I would gladly have used her as my mentor. I'm sourcing her mainly because she was the first one who encouraged me to continue writing and doing things.
