Helen Kilmartin Capstone

Abstract

This project was not only a project, I wanted to use this opportunity to help myself and my peers. Since we are all heading to college/military/on our own paths, I realized we will all be emptying our pockets soon enough. So I came up with a way to help everyone out. I’ve been recreating images from pintrest, tumblr, imgfave, and other DIY sights and I realized if I can save money doing this, my peers might want to as well. I made cheap DIY (do it yourself) ideas into public youtube videos. So far I've made some decorations and an impressively easy cheesy bread, I plan to make more videos. By making these youtube videos, I am hoping that I can help my peers save some money during one of the most financially draining parts of our lives.

Here is the link for my youtube channel, where you can see all of the videos so far!

I've done videos sporadically when I had the resources and time, since the middle of october. Although there are only four right now (not including intro video), I'm in the midst of editing another video showing how I helped another student from SLA with her capstone, and more people have been asking to join the DIWHAT channel. So more videos will be coming!

1. "Valentine's Day Treats & DIY Gift Ideas!." YouTube. YouTube, 26 Jan. 2014. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnDp151B4yo>.

Bethany Mota has been one of the biggest inspirations for me, this is one of her latest videos on cute ideas for valentines day. She comes up with so many uniques ideas for her videos, I also want to come up with things people will enjoy learning to make. She really got me started on DIY in my normal life, and it got me started with my capstone idea.

2."Tumblr." Sign up. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <https://www.tumblr.com/>.

Tumblr. is a huge part in my project, looking at all of these cool hipster pictures and trying to create the things in them is the capstone. So far I do not have a tumblr. but I will create one so I can find more of these pictures, as of right now I've been using my friends and finding pictures from there.

3."Pinterest." Pinterest. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2014. <https://www.pinterest.com/>.

Pinterest is one of the biggest inspirations in DIY not only for me, but for everyone who has heard of DIY. I get so many interesting ideas from Pinterest for my daily life, and I save some for the youtube channel too. It has everything from cute cupcakes toppers to how to make camo pants. I 100% couldn't do this if pinterest wasn't around.

4."DIY Network." - Home Improvement How-To & Remodeling Projects. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.diynetwork.com/>.

The DIY network website shows me how I can create these pictures I see. Since my project is going off of a picture without instructions, I sometimes get lost or need some help. That's when it's time to go to the DIY network website so I can see similar things and get ideas of how to remake the picture I have or how to improve it.

5."DIY Network." America's 10 Worst DIYers :. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.diynetwork.com/americas-10-worst-diyers/show/index.html>.

Americas top 10 worst DIYers is a hilarious show about how DIY-ing can go terribly wrong. I always thought that DIY was all about  doing whatever you wanted to make something you would display in your house, and it turns out it is but you need to have the skills to make nice things. I don't have a background in art or any skills but that is the point of my project, to see if a normal person could make these so called "Do it Yourself" projects. I do pick up some skills from this show, just so I don't make too much of a mess.

6.Matheson, Betsy. DIY projects for the self-sufficient homeowner: 25 ways to build a self-reliant lifestyle. Minneapolis, Minn.: Creative Pub. International, 2011. Print.

I have not actually gotten my hand on this book (physically), but I have read a lot about it on the ebook preview and I have read reviews on Amazon. I am going to try to find it in my local libraries. The reason I think this book could be very influential is because t shows the basics and techniques that skilled DIY-ers like Martha Stewart and such, use when they make things.

7.Lupton, Ellen. D.I.Y.: design it yourself. New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 2005. Print.

This book is kind of similar to the last but it is more specialized on the actual design of DIY. Anyone can make a simple cookie sheet turn into an interesting notification board by spray painting it and hanging it on a wall with some magnets, but it takes skill to make it look nice. This book teaches average Joes how to make nothing look like a really nice something. I also want to get my hands on this book sometime before this year is over, but definitely for my presentation.

8."D.I.Y. Glitter Mod Podge Accessories!." YouTube. YouTube, 26 Jan. 2013. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDPxsW4H4YA>.

This is the first video I saw of DIY around this time last year. In this video Brittany Louise Taylor is making her own glitter phone case, I wanted to make my mom one for her birthday but I didn't know how to. I went on Youtube (my generations google) and I looked it up, a year ago hers was the only one up so I clicked on it and got pulled into the DIY world.

9."imgfave - amazing and inspiring images." imgfave. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://imgfave.com/>.

This website is kind of like Tumblr and Pinterest had a baby. I went to this website freshmen year, along with a bunch of other freshmen because it wasn't locked in school. I realized that they have a DIY folder and I occasionally go on it, I actually get most of my ideas from this website. Some DIY sites have things on there that skilled artist could do, and this website shows true normal people, like myself, and their projects.

10."20 Creative DIY Project Ideas." Bored Panda RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.boredpanda.com/creative-diy-project-ideas/>.

This is the best blog post for bored people who don't want to be bored anymore. If you are laying around the house and want something to do you can pick something off of here and do it. Even though its only 20 ideas, all of them are things that you have in your house. They look intricate and complicated, but they are easy enough that you could do them with a child.
